Who is a teacher scholar?
Teacher scholars are teachers who crave the time to think deeply with colleagues about the complexity of student learning. They are excited to have a time and space set aside form the constant planning forward to dig deeply in to their focal students’ learning.
Teacher scholars tell us that they appreciate the time to slow down look and see how their individual students are thinking.
One third grade teacher scholar’s words echo a common sentiment of the teachers who join Mills Teacher Scholars:
I’ve been giving weekend journals for years but never really had the time, space, structure and support to make sense of how the journals are or are not supporting my students’ ability to develop their ideas.
Where we work
Mills Teacher Scholars supports teams of teachers across the East Bay to collaboratively study their students’ learning. We prioritize working with Title I schools and schools who are focused on improving learning outcomes for their students of color.
How to join
Teachers can either join Mills Teacher Scholars through the Scholars Group, which meets monthly at Mills or through a School-site Scholars Group. Mills Teacher Scholars currently has school-site partners in Berkeley, San Leandro, and Oakland Unified school districts.
The application deadline to join the Scholars Group is July 1.
Applications for the 2013-2014 school year are due July 1st. Early applications will be given first consideration.
The Scholars Group meets monthly from 5-8 at Mills College in the School of Education Building. There are also two Saturday meetings, one in the fall and one in the spring. Scholars who complete their inquiry projects, submit a poster summarizing their projects, and present their work in the spring will receive a stipend.
